SelectiveReading Gives You Control Over Read Receipts in iMessage

In iMessage, you have the option to enable read receipts, which tells the sender of an iMessage that you’ve read the message.

When read receipts are enabled, your contacts will see a read status underneath your messages with a time stamp showing what time you read their message.

By default this is disabled. If you have kept it disabled because there is no way to selectively enable or disable read receipts, then a new jailbreak called SelectiveReading may be the solution you’re looking for.

It replaces the On/Off toggle for Send Read Receipts toggle (Settings -> Messages) with a settings panel where you can select from the following options:

  • Yes
  • No
  • Ask

The first two options (Yes and No) work just like the On/Off toggle that is available in the stock iOS. If you select “Ask”, it will start prompting you whether you want to send a read receipt when you receive a message.

You also have the option to override the settings at a contact level via the Contacts app. So if you set it as “Ask” for say a Contact, when you get a message from that person, it will give you a prompt asking you whether you want to send a read receipt to that person.

It’s a pretty useful tweak if you want control over how the read receipts work. It also works with other messages jailbreak apps such as biteSMS and Messages+.

SelectiveReading is available on Cydia for $0.99. If you’ve a jailbreak iPhone then you can tap on the download link below to take you directly to its Cydia page where you can purchase and install it.
