Zombies may be one of the most overused App Store game gimmicks, but I can never resist a great zombie slaughtering app. Zombie Highway, from Auxbrain, is one of those fantastic zombie games that you just won’t want to miss.
In Zombie Highway you will take control of a car, which is careening down a highway. Sounds easy enough, right? Not so fast – that highway is littered with leaping zombies who are eager to gobble up your brains. You’re only equipped with a gun and your driving skills – how far can you go?
That’s the question in Zombie Highway, where your goal is to get as far as you possibly can before crashing into a barrier or tipping over from the weight of zombies hitching a ride.
This game uses tilt motion controls, so you will tilt your iPad left and right to drive down the road. You can swerve drastically to mow down zombies, but it’s impossible to avoid them all. To get the zombies off of your car, you’ll need to use a combination of weapons and quick driving maneuvers, scraping them off on road blocks like gum off of your shoe.
The controls are well calibrated, which means you are can execute sharp turns and quick maneuvers to bypass zombies, though it will take more than good controls to get by in this game. You need some serious tilting skills to progress through the game.
There are several different types of zombies, from your garden variety brain eater to ultra fast regenerating red zombies. Each zombie has a different ability that you need to overcome. For example, extra large zombies add quite a bit of weight to one side of your car, making you far more prone to tipping over.
As you play, you will unlock new weapons and cars. Getting a certain distance will reward you with upgraded guns in addition to achievements, thanks to Game Center support. You can challenge your friends too with leaderboards to find out who would last the longest in a zombie apocalypse.
All in all, this is a quick-paced driving game that’s a lot of fun. It’s violent, it’s challenging, it’s simple, and it’s impossible to put down.
What I liked: Zombie Highway has fluid gameplay and impressive graphics, which are two key ingredients for the perfect zombie game.
What I didn’t like: The gameplay has a tendency to get repetitive, since the only goal is to get as far as possible. There are different gameplay modes, but overall, you’re still spending your time tilting your iPad back and forth to drive down a zombie-ridden road.
To buy or not to buy: If you like racing games and you like zombies, this is a must have app that’s well worth the measly $0.99 purchase price.
